The idea for the show dates back to the late 1960s, when the People's Committee for the Development of Veliko Tarnovo organized and planned the development of the old capital as a historical, cultural and tourist center.

"Sound and Light" is broadcast year-round, regardless of weather conditions, and can be seen for free on national and city holidays. On any other day, the show is broadcast for a fee if requested by individual customers or organized groups. The paid broadcasts are watched from the observation hall with a panoramic terrace, located behind the Nativity of the Virgin Cathedral.
