The archaeological excavations of Tsarevets began in 1886 by the Czech scientist Karel Shkorpil and continued in 1893 and 1900, but the lack of system and organization gave them a partial character. After 1905, the excavations undertaken by the revived archaeological society in Tarnovo were carried out partially and intermittently due to lack of funds. In 1930, excavations were made that preceded the restoration of the Baldwin Tower. In 1932-1934, the first gate from the main entrance was restored, and in 1935, a study was made of the water supply of Tsarevets and "Trapezitsa".
After 1946, systematic archaeological investigations of the palace of the Bulgarian kings of the Second Bulgarian State began. In 1958 and 1959, the then District Historical Museum began researching the fortress system of Tsarevets. Established in 1974, the branch of the Archaeological Institute at the BAS began a comprehensive study of the inner fortress of Tsarevets.
For a long time during the Ottoman rule, the fortress was inhabited by Turkish settlers and was inaccessible to Bulgarians. After the Liberation of Bulgaria, Karel Shkorpil made the first excavations on the hill. In the 1930s, an attempt was made to rebuild the Baldwin Tower. In the 1950s, research began on the fortress system, the palace and the patriarchate on the hill. and on September 19, 1965, a meeting of the City Municipal People's Council was held. Todor Zhivkov was personally present, along with members of the Politburo Mitko Grigorov, Encho Staykov, Pencho Kubadinski, Academician Krastyu Miyatev, Emilian Stanev, Georgi Jagarov and others. A decision was made to restore the most important fortress of the Second Bulgarian State.
Dozens of scientists and archaeologists are involved in the restoration. Academicians Dimitar Dimitrov, Petar Kubadinski and others provide the main guidelines in the restoration, presenting the Brasov Minei, drawings and travelogues by travelers describing the fortress. BGN 400,000 has been allocated for the fortress. Shoveling and restoration of the fortress walls, the Dartsivoia complex and the Patriarchate began.
